Haunted Houses: Heim and das Unheimliche in the Nineteenth Century
This course will investigate the transformation of Gothic narrative into depth psychology in nineteenth-century German writing. It will explore the relationships among the ideas of Heimat, Heimlichkeit, and what becomes the uncanny (das Unheimliche), and thus the range of forms of identity from national through familial to individual. Reading will include short works by Goethe, Tieck, Hoffmann, Werner, Eichendorff, Heine, and Storm. Assignments will include several short exercises and one longer paper.
