Additional Details:

This seminar introduces students to the concept of the Anthropocene, the geological age of the human in which human impact on Earth is of such a scale that there is no untouched nature left. Theories of the Anthropocene will be considered and applied to the reading of literature with an emphasis on drama and performance starting from early articulations in the mid-nineteenth century to literary descriptions (and critiques) of systemic environmental destruction today. We will also reflect on the question of what literary critical scholarship might look like in the Anthropocene.
