Der blaue Engel (1930)
Joseph von Sternberg
*Starring Marlene Dietrich

Josef von Sternberg’s 1930 Der blaue Engel (The Blue Angel) introduced America to one of the greatest sex symbols of the 20th century, Marlene Dietrich. The Think Transatlantic film series continues its consideration of actresses who made the successfully achieved stardom across the pond. Last week’s starlet from The Bourne Identity, Franka Potente, played the title role in the high-paced thriller Lola rennt. Marlene Dietrich also plays a character named Lola but you won’t see her doing much running in this movie; she is the main attraction at a Berlin cabaret. When a strict but well-respected English professor catches his students ogling some photos of the seductive stripper during his Shakespeare lecture, Professor Rath decides to intercede in order to preserve the respectability of his naïve students and sneaks into the cabaret. But instead of catching his students red-handed, the esteemed Professor (Un)Rath reddens himself and falls under the spell of the femme fatale who just “can’t help it.”

Screening is restricted to UW students, faculty, and staff.
