"Politics of Genius: Pro-republican Concepts of Leadership in Weimar Germany (and what happens to a literary scholar who tries to act on foreign territory)"

Dr. Carolin Lange (DAAD Visiting Scholar, University of Washington)

Friday, March 15, 2013 - 1:30pm
Rey Library, Denny Hall 308

From a literary perspective, the talk deals with the political culture of the pro-republican middle class during the Weimar Republic and its images of leadership. It aims to show how this groupʼs perception and interpretation of politics was aesthetically influenced by narratives used to describe an ideal political leader that can be traced back to a popularized version of Sturm und Drangʼs concept of genius. During the Weimar era, hugely emotive expectations towards politics are fostered, and they may become a burden for the young state.
