Scott B. Noegel: “Finding Myself in the Past: On Forschung, Friedhöfe, und Freidenkende”

In this presentation, I shall discuss my recent book, A Pioneering Kin, which offers a historical portrait of the four immigrant families who constitute my ancestry. It traces their origins back to 16th century Germany and charts the changing fortunes and historical circumstances that encouraged them to immigrate in the early 19th century. The families were among the earliest settlers in Wisconsin. They lived among Native American tribes and sought to negotiate their German culture in a new and rapidly changing Wisconsin. I shall focus my remarks on some of the more interesting discoveries and on the process of research.
