Syllabus Description (from Canvas):

Contesting Extinction: Imagining Multispecies Futures (Autumn 2026)

Professor Jason Groves |  MW 1000-1120 |  OUG 141

Course description: Through a multi-disciplinary approach, we will look at how current threats to biodiversity are inseparable from threats to cultural diversity and how the history and concept of extinction is implicated in histories of colonialism and imperialism. Resisting the apocalyptic appeal of art that depicts terminal extinction scenarios, course readings and assignments are oriented toward imagining and generating livable futures in the wake of biodiversity loss.

Same course as GLTS 251B, CHID 243 B, and English 265.

Designed For:

Anyone interested in learning about the current extinction crisis and contesting it collaboratively.

*These numbers all belong to the same course, but the Area of Inquiry credits vary by which course number you choose.  A&H: GLITS, ENGL, CHID; SSc: CHID, GERMAN, ENGL; DIV: ENGL, GERMAN
