Introduction:

This course looks at queer and trans culture, literature and film from the Weimar period to our contemporary times. Engaging with fictional literature, poetry, film and a variety of secondary literature (mostly short essays), we consider the multiplicity of queer and trans life in Germany, through the lens of artistic and cultural production.

Together we will discuss questions such as: Was the German Weimar republic a “golden age” of LGBTIQ+ culture? How has the terminology of queer and trans identification changed over the past hundred years? How did the Nazi regime and its aftermath impact LGBTIQ+ culture in Germany? What are the questions and themes posed by queer and trans artists, writers and film directors today?

Readings and discussions mostly in German.
