Submitted by Stephanie N. Welch on

The Department of Germanics is excited to announce that Sam Hylton and Katie McKeever are the winners of the second annual Lufthansa Award for Excellence in German Studies.

The Award—a free round-trip ticket on Lufthansa to Germany for each student—was presented at the Departmental convocation on June 14, 2014.

Sam and Katie were selected for outstanding performance in courses devoted to the history of German literature (German 421, 422, 423).

The Department of Germanics is proud of Sam and Katie and grateful to Lufthansa for its generous support.

I am extremely honored to be presented with the 2014 Lufthansa Award and would like to extend my deepest gratitude. Now that I have graduated with my degree in Germanics I plan to use my ticket to fly to Essen, Germany. Here I will train for Sprint Kayaking and study at the University. Eventually I would like to enroll for a Masters program at the University of Potsdam for a Masters in Education to become a teacher for German and English. I could not be more pleased with the support and wonderful experience I have gained from the UW Germanics Department. The entire staff is a treasure that has inspired me to pursue my love of languages and has always made me feel at home.

Sam Hylton with Prof. Sabine Wilke at Spring Convocation 2014

I'm very honored and humbled to have been selected for the 2014 Lufthansa Award. As I approach a time of great transition post-graduation, this award makes the possibility of continuing my studies in Germany a much more realistic goal. To this end, I have applied to several MA programs in Berlin, Munich and Cologne in both German as a Foreign Language and Music. Perhaps my ideal pursuit at this point is a Master of Music in Jazz Piano at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, where I recently auditioned. Although I'm still awaiting the results of my many applications, I'm thrilled with the prospect of further studying and immersing myself in the wonderful German culture.
