Selim S. Kuru: Stranger in a strange land: Austria in Memoirs of an Ottoman Slave

One of the most interesting Ottoman Turkish autobiographical works is a slave account from the late 17th century. Osman Aga, a low ranking army officer at the time, from Temesvar put down his impressions about living with the 'infidel' in great detail. This talk presents a depiction of Austrian society as perceived by an Ottoman who was captured in today's Romania by Austrians in 1688 and served many masters in Kapfenberg and Vienna.

Selim S. Kuru is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Near Eastern Languages and Civilization Department at the University of Washington. Kuru is a philologist of Turkish language with a focus on 14th-16th centuries Turkish literary texts and cultures.
