Biography

Seth Berk studied German language, literature, and cultural studies at Columbia University, in the City of New York (B.A., 2005), received a master’s degree at the University of Washington’s Department of Germanics in 2009, and earned status as a doctoral candidate in March of 2012. Seth’s scholarly interests include Enlightenment philosophy and literature, German idealism, Romanticism, the avant-garde, the Frankfurt School, and post-war narratives. Theories of identity, materiality, gender, memory, and psychoanalysis continually inform his engagements with texts. Seth is currently participating in a joint-degree program between the University of Washington and the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster, Germany. His dissertation revolves around masculine and feminine fantasies of Amazons in German literature, with the French Revolution serving as its historical crux. Seth serves on the editorial board of the open-access journal, Textpraxis, through his affiliation with the Graduate School Practices of Literature. He also recently published an article on Franz Kafka's Der Verschollene in The German Quarterly.
