Boundless and Unashamed: German 304 students put on a great performance

German 304 provides students with the opportunity for language learning through performance. Led by instructors Kristina Pilz and Olivia Albiero, spring 2016 undergraduate students took to the stage with "Deutschsein für Fortgeschrittene: Grenzenlos und Unverschämt." Willkommen zu unserem Theaterstück des Deutsch Kurses 304. Unser Zweck für diese Aufführung ist die Herausforderungen von Leuten darzustellen, die "anders Deutsch" sind. Durch eine Variante von Geschichten, Gesprächen, Gedichten, und Hip-Hop Musik wollen wir Ihnen zeigen, wie das Leben von Leuten in Deutschland ist, wenn sie nicht weiß sind, und die Vielfalt von Kulturen, die in Deutschland gefunden werden kann. Am wichtigsten haben wir diese Botschaft für Sie: wir können etwas ändern, mit Liebe und Verstand.

 

Summary of Scenes:

Prolog Poesie AlbumIn which Samy Deluxe invites you to listen to his new album and we invite you to listen to our play.

Scene 1 Kämpfen oder Klappe halten: In which people from many walks of life visit a Turkish fresh vegetable store and the proprietor must decide whether to fight against their judgments or simply keep quiet.

Scene 2 bln zu rädern: In which a young U-Bahn traveler describes his thoughts and experiences living in Berlin.

Scene 3 Andere Sitten: In which Syrian and German guests accept an invitation to a pot-luck party from a Syrian-German, each following their own ideas of what an invitation means, and the host realizes her disdain of noodle salad is as strong as ever.

Scene 4 Der erste Kuss nach drei Jahren: In which Ahmad founds a Honolulu committee and Carlo’s strategy for meeting women in bars actually finds him a date.

Scene 5 von einer vormals guten … : In which a young Afro-German woman decides not to be well behaved anymore.  

Scene 6 Nirgendwo hingehören Vereinnahmt werden: In which Katharina, May, and Laura discuss what it means to belong as an Afro-German and where they find a sense of belonging over coffee.

Intermezzo Okonomiyaki, Passiv : In which making Okonomyaki brings together all parts of society and German grammar brings together the past and the future.

Scene 7 Begriffserklärung N-Wort: In which we find a dictionary definition of the N-word.

Scene 8 Die Akte James  Knopf: In which the many faces of the character James Knopf show the different faces of racism in Germany.

Scene 9 Ich möchte nicht weiß und auch nicht schwarz sein: In which Katharina, May, and Laura discuss the connotations of different words for concepts such as Afro-German and mixed race, which groups they wish to belong to, and which groups they wish to escape.

Scene 10 Leipzig: In which racism approaches from all sides in the form of threats at a bus stop, newspapers, and radio.

Scene 11 g r e n z e n l o s u n d u n v e r s c h ä m t ein gedicht gegen die deutsche sch-einheit: In which May shares her determination to live boundless and unashamed, regardless of others’ prejudices.

Epilog Liebe und Verstand, SchwarzWeiss: In which a call is made for understanding and Samy Deluxe affirms his joy at the different parts of his life and background, no matter how confusing the feelings they provoke may be.
