On the occasion of this year's German Embassy’s Campus Week (“Shaping Germany”), the Department of Germanics had been screening and discussing a series films about migration, immigration, and escape.
Screenings are free and open to UW students, faculty, and staff. Snacks and refreshments will be provided, courtesy of the German Embassy’s 2018 Campus Week.

WIR SIND JUNG, WIR SIND STARK (We are young. We are strong, Burhan Qurbani, 2014)
On 24th August 1992 in the eastern German city of Rostock a rampaging mob, to the applause and cheering of more than 3,000 bystanders, besieged and set fire to a residential building containing, among others, more than 120 Vietnamese men, women and children on what has since become known as "The Night of the Fire." The riots became a symbol for xenophobia in the just recently reunited Germany. This film recounts the incident from the perspectives of three different characters.

AUS DEM NICHTS (In the Fate, Fatih Akin, Germany, 2017)
As a response to growing right-wing violence in Germany, Turkish-German filmmaker Fatih Akin made the film “In the Fade,” which stars German-born Diane Kruger as a woman whose husband and young son are killed in a far-right bomb attack.

FREMDE HAUT (Unveiled, Angelina Maccarone, Germany, 2005)
Fremde Haut is a powerful story of an Iranian woman, persecuted in her country for loving another woman, who acquires a new, male identity, in an effort to stay in a new found home in Germany.

TRANSIT (Christian Petzold, Germany, 2018)
Transit is based on Anna Seghers’ novel about the plight of refugees fleeing the violence of WWII, which is striking in its treatment and self-reflexive obsession with acts of storytelling. Petzold sets his film in contemporary Marseille where characters from the past move around. And so, refugees from back then meet refugees from today and stories of the past meet stories of the present.

WESTERN (Valeska Griesebach, Germany, 2017)
Valeska Grisebach's striking drama about foreign construction workers in rural Bulgaria explores facets of masculinity and the dynamics of dominance—interpersonally as well as geopolitically. True to its bold, declarative title, Western offers a provocative engagement with Hollywood's long-enduring genre.

WILLKOMMEN AUF DEUTSCH (Carsten Rau and Hauke Wendler, Germany, 2014)
The film is about a town in northern Germany whose citizens are obliged to welcome a wave a refugees.
