This summer, Arpit Samuel, a graduate student in our Department of German Studies, was among the select few to attend the prestigious Summer Academy at the Goethe-Institut in Dresden. Selected as one of only 22 participants United States of America, Arpit immersed himself in an intense 12-day program that enriched his understanding of teaching German as a foreign language.
Arpit shared enthusiastically about the program, "It was an incredible opportunity to dive deep into innovative teaching methodologies and really connect with peers and experts in the field. I gained insights that you simply can't get from textbooks alone."
The academy's packed schedule included practical workshops and exciting excursions. One standout experience was visiting the Technical University of Dresden, where Arpit and fellow academy attendees exchanged ideas with students learning English. This dialogue enhanced their understanding of effective language teaching strategies and highlighted the demand for German language educators.
Further exploring educational strategies, Arpit participated in discussions about the creative evolution of classroom design with university directors and heads of language programs. These conversations opened his eyes to the potential for transforming traditional approaches to language education.
The group also ventured to Pirna and toured the Friedrich Schiller Gymnasium, observing a unique bi-national program that facilitates collaborative learning between German and Czech students. This visit underscored the importance of adaptive learning environments in today's globalized educational landscape.
A cultural highlight of the trip was attending Giuseppe Verdi's "Don Carlos" at the magnificent Semper Opera House in Dresden, adding an unforgettable artistic dimension to the educational experience.
Reflecting on his time in Dresden, Arpit noted, "The whole experience was invaluable. It not only broadened my pedagogical skills but also provided me with extensive networking opportunities and prepared for my current role as a Teaching Assistant for German 101 this quarter."
Arpit’s journey at the Summer Academy exemplifies the impact of immersive educational experiences in shaping the next generation of teachers. As he now applies these enriched teaching methods in his role as a Teaching Assistant for German 101, Arpit continues to strive for more such experiences and share them with us.
