Spring has sprung

We are very happy to announce another enjoyable “mentoring lunch” with current UW German majors. On February 25, 2019, Alex Minami (UW class of 2010) and Arabelle Liepold (Managing Director, Goethe Pop-Up, Seattle) joined five students to chat over lunch at the UW Faculty Club. Alex currently works for the Seattle Opera as the Community Engagment Manager. Among other innovative projects, he helps manage and cultivate Seattle Opera’s relationships within the Puget Sound community and develop new ways for opera to serve its needs. Arabelle is the leader of the Goethe Institute Pop-Up site, which Seattle is very lucky to host this year.  She has spearheaded and organized an exciting line-up of cultural events for the season.  They both shared amusing stories about their time post-graduation and also gave our students helpful practical tips about the application process and how to make themselves attractive to employers.

Present were five of our bright young majors: Xinhe Ding, Briana Lindly, Kendra Berry, Miah Robert, and Katie Bossio. They all expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to learn from one another’s experiences and ideas afterwards.

Alex Minami (right): “Es hat mich sehr gefreut, euch alle kennenzulernen! Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have or advice I can offer, and I do hope to see you at Goethe Pop Up events and Seattle Opera events.”

Xinhe Ding

Xinhe Ding: “It was an enjoyment to attend this mentoring lunch to hear the helpful career advice from Alex and Arabelle. The conversation with them give me encouragement and confidence to face the seemingly frightening and exciting future after graduation.”

Briana Lindly: “Arabelle and Alex gave some great advice about navigating the hiring process and figuring out a career trajectory. It was great meeting them and hearing about their experiences while getting to know other Germanics majors! ”

Miah Robert: “I am very grateful that I was given the opportunity to attend the mentorship lunch. Hearing from Alex and Arabelle, as well as the other students, about their involvement with German and how it has played a role in their lives was both helpful and interesting. I hope I can attend more events like this in the future.”
