Margarethe von Trotta (1942 in Berlin geboren) gilt als eine der wichtigsten Regisseurinnen des deutschen Kinos und wurde als "weltweit führende feministische Filmemacherin" bezeichnet. Sie hat sich auch als Schauspielerin einen Namen gemacht und in Filmen bedeutender deutscher Regisseure wie Fassbinder und Schlöndorff mitgewirkt. Ihre Filme beschäftigen sich mit Beziehungen zwischen Frauen (Schwestern, beste Freundinnen) sowie mit den Beziehungen zwischen Frauen und Männern, oft in politischen Situationen. Zu ihren bekanntesten Filmen gehören: "Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum" (1975, Co-Regie mit Volker Schlöndorff), "Das zweite Erwachen der Christa Klages" (1977), "Die Bleierne Zeit" (1981), "Rosa Luxemburg" (1985) und "Hannah Arendt" (2012).
Margarethe von Trotta Film Series: ROSA LUXEMBURG; May 9, 2023
The Department of German Studies is hosting a film screening of Margarethe von Trotta’s film Rosa Luxemburg (1986). The film depicts the life story of this thinker and activist of the international left, portrayed in the film by the great actress Barbara Sukowa. Amidst the growing militarization that preceded World War I, Rosa stood out as an example of uncompromising anti-militarism. As a theorist and an activist, as a feminist and a nature lover, as a public speaker and a prisoner, she lived a moving and revolutionary life.
For their amazing work on this film, Sukowa was awarded Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival and von Trotta was nominated for the Palme d’Or.

Margarethe Von Trotta Film Series: Hannah Arendt, May 23, 2023
Margarethe von Trotta’s 2012 biographical film begins at a critical point in Arendt’s career. In May 1960, Adolf Eichmann – known as the "architect of the final solution" – is captured in Argentina by Israeli Mossad agents and brought to stand trial in Jerusalem. Arendt, who has been living in New York City since 1941, attends the trial and covers the proceedings for The New Yorker. Her reflections on Eichmann himself, the trial, and the notion of evil prove controversial among intellectual circles back in New York, in the Jewish community overall, and among her own friends and peers – threatening to destroy some of her most important relationships.
